First Moves Matter

How to choose your initial AI use case
When it comes to adopting AI, the hardest part is often getting started. You know AI has the potential to transform your business, but with so many different ways to leverage it, where do you begin? What’s the right move when you can’t afford to waste time or resources on projects that don’t deliver?

It’s often said that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step — and in this case, that first step is made at a fork in the road. Go too broad, and you’ll end up overwhelmed. Choose poorly, and you’ll sink effort into work that doesn’t move the needle. But get it right, and you’ll have a game-changing breakthrough that propels your organization into the future and builds momentum for further AI initiatives.

Follow these three steps to quickly demonstrate the transformative potential of AI in your business:

1. Define measurable outcomes

Successful projects begin with specificity.  Defining clear objectives from the outset ensures that your efforts remain focused and aligned with wider business strategy. Vague objectives like “improving customer experience” won’t suffice. Instead, you need to define specific KPIs that align with your overall goals — like reducing customer service response times by 50%. Concrete, measurable goals  allow you to precisely track progress, demonstrate ROI, and make adjustments as needed.

This clarity not only keeps the project on track but also provides clear benchmarks for success, ensuring everyone is on the same page and evaluates AI efforts through the same lens.

2. Focus on immediate value

While it’s tempting to try to reap as many of AI’s benefits as possible, trying to overhaul everything at once is often a recipe for failure. Instead, focus on one area where AI can deliver quick, tangible results. Quick wins build momentum and provide proof points that you can bring back to your stakeholders to help secure buy-in for future projects.

While there is a lot of external pressure on businesses to keep pace with the market or their competitors, AI projects must be driven by internal goals, objectives, and issues. Ask yourself “What problem are we trying to solve?” If, for example, you need to close more deals in the next quarter, the best use of AI could be assisting your sales team by analyzing calls with customers and prospects, highlighting key opportunities, and providing real-time coaching based on the tone and content of the conversation so you can close deals faster.

Other common AI-driven solutions to business problems include:

  • Enhanced customer service: Integrating AI chatbots capable of handling routine customer inquiries can help improve response times and free up human agents for more complex interactions. This can reduce operational costs, enhance customer satisfaction, and enable customer service teams to handle a higher volume of interactions without additional pressure on human agents.
  • Deeper data insights: Businesses are inundated with data, yet often struggle to extract meaningful insights. AI can analyze large datasets to uncover trends and patterns for faster, more informed decision making. From demand forecasting to inventory optimization, AI opens doors to new efficiencies humans may miss.
  • Data standardization: Preparing, cleaning, and organizing all of that data for use can be tedious and time-consuming, but is essential for reliable insights. AI can automate this task and free up your team to focus on strategy rather than manual data entry.

3. Plan for scalability

An effective initial AI project should not only solve a problem, but also lay the groundwork for future initiatives.

Consider how the lessons and technology from your first use case could expand or apply to other areas of the business. A simple AI model that started by analyzing sales calls could evolve into a full-scale virtual sales assistant, or a customer service chatbot might begin with basic queries but gradually learn to handle more sophisticated customer interactions. Both of those use cases might later expand to create a chatbot for HR that can handle employee’s queries about benefits, time off, and more.

Again, it can be tempting to try to do all of these at once, but starting small helps ensure that when the time comes to grow, you know what to expect and how to effectively manage it. Think of this first step as creating the foundation for a house; it needs to be solid and stable before more can be built on top of it. AI is ripe with possibility, but effectively realizing its potential means taking the journey one step at a time.
